I am pretty average at most things.
I was very average at school, till I dropped physics and chemistry and discovered economics.
I was very average at work till I switched from UI Design to a career in Human Resources.
I realise, the only time I excel, is when I am being myself, or doing things I enjoy.
My best articles are the ones that demonstrate strong opinions. Where everyone doesn’t agree with my views, and that is ok, as they remember me.
Being agreeable to everything is being lukewarm. No fire in the belly. Where’s the passion?
Everytime you water down yourself to fit in or conform to ideals, you end up average, generally acceptable. But being widely accepted, is often not the path to making a positive difference or driving real change.
So, what is?
Being yourself. Doing you. Embracing and leveraging your uniqueness.
What makes most people average?
Holding back on their uniqueness. Seeking validation from other people.
To make a difference, you have to be truly different.
By all means, be inspired by others, have role models, look up to mentors, learn, but do not imitate.
Be an original of yourself, not a photocopy of someone else.
Greatness is an outlier. Don’t water it down to fit in.
Everything you need to standout and win, you already have.
Your uniqueness is your competitive edge.
Why compete mass market when you already have a monopoly in yourself?
You are a star. We all are.
Don’t dim your light because it makes other people uncomfortable.
And you don’t need permission to be yourself.
You are enough. More than enough.
Be weird, be quirky, be loud, be quiet. Be imperfect.
In the words of Oscar Wilde, “Be yourself, everyone else is already taken.”
Who are you today?
