At 26, I took a leap that changed the course of my life. I quit my job as a design engineer at Nokia UK—not because I had it all figured out, but because I knew I needed work that aligned with who I truly was.
I took time to explore my strengths, to understand what I genuinely wanted, and that journey of self discovery led me into consulting, a role that energized me and eventually opened doors to becoming Head of HR.
Then, in 2008, I attended my first SHRM conference. One session stopped me in my tracks: It was a session by Patrick Lencioni on “3 Signs You’re in a Miserable Job.” I’ll never forget the line where he said, ‘The worst misery is being really good at a job you hate.”
That was my wake-up call.
After that experience, I committed to finding a career path that felt meaningful and true to who I am.
The journey has been a whirlwind of emotions, and hands down, the most fulfilling part has been seeing others grow. Through Kendor, the vehicle I founded to house my creative efforts, thousands of lives have been impacted, and though still miserable at times 😁, hearing success stories reminds me why we do this. Why I do this: with glee and plenty of suffering.
What baffles me is that you would think that after 15 years it would be smooth sailing as it has been finally figured out, I wish!
Every year throws a different dynamic. If it is not a recesson, it is a depression. If it not physical, it is virtual. If it is not staff issues, it is my personal issues. Sometimes a combination of several factors, sometimes of all.
Conferences give you access to people you would not ordinarily meet. They can change the trajectory of your whole life. They are a unique opportunity to gain access to coaches, mentors, and leading professionals. I still remember the young lady that latched on to Funke Amobi Chartered CCIPD, FCIPD, FCIPM at our 10th anniversary celebration. She ended up working at Stanbic IBTC and still does.
A few weeks back, I, a former attendee of SHRM Conference was on a panel, sharing the stage with SHRM, USA president Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP. When I first attended the SHRM conference in 2008, I would never have imagined what transpired after then. A few of us who attended returned from the USA inspired and thus, set up SHRM Nigeria while I launched Kendor and the HR Bootcamp in 2009.
This year, in celebration of the 15th anniversary of the HR Bootcamp, a heart full of gratitude and support of incredible partners, we can offer 2 special masterclasses at a giveaway rate. With 50 seats available, we have partnered with experienced coaches, mentors and leaders to offer support.
