My inbox has been inundated with messages from people experiencing career SOS.
Last week, I spoke about career unrest, but some are experiencing worse, career arrest. The opportunity for personal growth and dignity in labour has been cut short.
One story irked me. Why? How does a firm generate billions a year and declare profit, yet pay senior level staff NGN150k, a little over £100 a month? After serving for 10 years? Haba!
As an entrepreneur, I am not claiming sainthood, as the terrain is tough and we all have our issues🙏. For some of us, our dream is to compensate our staff well. I know business owners who spend sleepless nights strategising, even borrowing money to pay staff. They derive joy seeing good staff progress and fulfil their potential in life.
Even when we cannot afford it, we make sacrifices, throw in bonuses, provide flexibility and learning and growth opportunities.
It is a thing of pride to be responsible for people earning well. For genuine business leaders, there is nothing more fulfilling than seeing people thriving under your leadership. For some, it is like seeing their children growing to become decent humans they can be proud of.
No doubt, that there are many firms with genuine financial constraints, and for no fault of theirs, they cannot pay staff well. However, there are the others that give everyone a bad name. The businesses who earn well but refuse to pay their staff a decent living.
Why will a business be progressing while those building the business are going down?
The most annoying part is that they keep hiring. And please, do not give the excuse that they are helping unemployment, as they are exploiting it and testing people’s integrity.
Such practices are set up to attract unscrupulous staff.
Decent people will eventually leave on their day of reckoning. Decent staff will eventually wake up.
Kudos to those busineses and staff who are contributing positively.
This one irked me, so I had to share.
Some businesses need to do better and if they can’t, please, just release the staff back to the universe.
Career arrest should be illegal.
