I have wasted time overthinking decisions, regretted inactions, replayed what ifs, waiting for the perfect moment, and beating myself up over lost opportunities.
I am not grateful for the things I hesitated on. I am grateful for the things I actually did. The actions taken.
The quick decisions. The ones I made on the fly, before I felt ready. The ones that scared me. The ones that I committed to first and figured out details later.
The decision to enrol myself in a full time doctorate programe without being sure how I would manage it with work and family commitments. I applied, 1 week to the deadline. I am still chuffed that 3 years went by so quickly, and it is now a been there, done that action.
The last-minute trips that turned into unforgettable experiences. Surfing online one minute, bags packed and off days later.
The unplanned visits to friends that deepened relationships.
The unplanned conferences attended that changed the trajectory of my career.
The funeral I almost talked myself out of attending, but helped me face my adult fears.
The book I wrote even when I doubted myself.
I could have missed them all if I had let my mind take over. Because the mind will always try to talk you out of doing things. It will tell you to wait. To be sure. To have a plan for every possible outcome.
Procrastination is a thief of time. Indecision is its older brother, a tormentor.
The only way to make progress is to decide and move. Before you feel ready. Even when you are afraid. Especially when you are afraid.
I can go on and on, instead I will say this:
Nothing happens when you do nothing.
Nothing of significance. Nothing you dreamed and nothing you deserve.
Set things in motion and you will be glad you did. Action creates momentum and momentum changes everything.
