Yesterday, we identified 3 signs that you may be in the wrong career. What good is a problem identified? Nothing, if we cannot solve it. So today, I bring you solutions.
If you are in the wrong career, there are 3 things you can do about your current situation and the great thing is that you can do them all today.
1. Discover your passion
Before moving from one bad situation to another, take a deeper look at yourself. What causes or subjects do you feel deeply about? What can you dedicate your whole life doing? Take stock of your interests and skills gathered over the years. What do you enjoy doing? What comes naturally to you? If you are not sure what they are, ask friends, colleagues, mentors of what they think you are good at. You can also write a story of your dream career; where will you be and what will you be doing? Start with your own vision of your career. Whatever you do, do not jump into another career without clarifying your career vision, passion and interests.
2. Plan and Execute
Yes, you have heard it a zillion times that if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. You have heard it so many times because it is true. Make a commitment today. Write down your career goals, ensure they are SMART; specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound. Break them down into smaller goals, and then one by one, start to execute them.
Remember, if you change nothing, nothing changes. If you do nothing, nothing will happen.
My book Change Your Career outlines ten proven strategies to help you change careers quickly and successfully. Each chapter concludes with a task that helps you articulate your career plans. Once your plans are clearly articulated, the only thing left will be for you to take action. Don’t just plan, execute!
3. Hire a Professional
Sometimes it is easier to talk to a stranger than talk to relatives or friends. If you think you are depressed, seek the help a trained therapist to confirm your diagnosis. Depression responds very well to treatment and one of the most common and effective forms of treatment is talk therapy. During talk therapy a trained counsellor or therapist listens to you and helps you find your own solutions to problems without judging you.
If on the other hand you need a more practical approach focused on execution, consider hiring a professional coach. A coach will focus more on getting results that will move your career from where you currently are to where you want to be, much faster than if you were to do it yourself. If you have been stuck in the same place for a long time, then it is time to hire a coach to guide you through clarifying your goals, outlining your options and charting an action plan for the way forward.
So, in just 3 big steps you can be well on your way to career success! See you on the other side. All the very best!
